Shoot 1: 29 October, Ilkley tunnel, Ilkley park

Shoot 1

On the 29th of October, sticking to our shooting schedule, we filmed our first footage for our music video Faithless - Insomnia. We were unaware of the clips we would be shooting however, we knew the locations and the set-ups we would be using. Therefore, we improvised and shot what we thought we could work with whilst editing the video whether it is going to be relevant or not.

Locations and set-ups we used.
  • Bench out side Ilkley playhouse
  • The tunnel in Ilkley park
  • The bridge over the river Wharfe
  • Benches on the bridge
We filmed a few different scenes such as our character sitting on a bench on his own,a lot of walking shots including some OTS as well as CU and MS, we experimented with shadows in the tunnel which worked very well as our light sources worked effectively for this. I also came up with the idea of the character laying on a bench but moving around into different positions, then in the during process as the character will be moving from position to position we could use a time lapse to speed it up to emphasise the fact that he has insomnia.

As we had planned we had to wait till later in the day to film approximately 5 o clock. As a result of this we had difficulty with the light provided. We worked with what we had such as phone lights, street lights and one torch. In some shots the light sources we were using worked effectively and looked very good. Though in some shots the light was barely visible meaning we couldn't see the character. But as it's a dark abstract video some shots will work.

This will be something we have to plan ahead for, luckily we had our phone lights and took a torch with us. But, for our next shoot we will definitely have to use a more reliable get source such as a brighter tech or one idea we had that could work well would be to use the car headlights.

We encountered to other problems but these can be easily solved. We couldn't attach the camera to the tri-pod properly so near enough every shot is at a Dutch angle which we will use but obviously not in every shot. Also, our camera ran out of battery mid way through shooting but due to our planning we had bought three other fully charged batteries with us so this problem was overcome immediately.

Our next shoot is scheduled for the 30th of October which we plan on filming in a house to get shots of our main character struggling to get to sleep in his own house, for this we are thinking of creating a set-up in his garage so we will therefore have to account for the time it will take to set this up however because the garage is rather dark it will look affective. Also whilst we're there we may from in the woods round the back depending on our lighting situation as it will be pitch black as we can't film till late again.

Faithlss - God Is A DJ analysis

Heres the original video.

The video follows the editing style of the insomnia video, this is a black and white cover which gives the video an abstract feel. However this does change towards the end of the video as it seems from the start it is following a narrative as well as performance footage of the main artist. As the second drop comes in the music video changes into full colour when the artist is performing and it only shows performance footage.

On the left is an example of the performance footage, in the video this includes footage of all members of the band as well as Maxi Jazz performing. This also includes people in the audience.

One thing i have found that in this video maxi jazz uses sign language to appeal to a wider audience base and in terms of the publicity of the video it works extremely well.

Initial Insomnia Audience research

Audience Research

We defined our primary and secondary target audience, these were aged 15-25 and our secondary 25-35. For a starting point we decided our starting point will be recognition of the act/track

Recognition of Artist/Track

Initially i will start by giving our primary target audience (15-25) a sheet of images of the lead singer form Faithless (Maxi Jazz) therefore we can find out whether our artist is easily recognisable.

To do this i will be filming in the sixth form centre which is full of people aged between 16-18 a small section of our target audience to get a bigger picture i will have to ask people outside of this age range.

To be honest i don't think much of our primary target audience will recognise who this artist is, there will be limited act specific recognition. More so our secondary target will do, because of the time era that faithless was present, 1995 on wards with no recent hits.

Tracks:

Following the showing of images i will then move onto tracks or visa versa. Showing them tracks first to see if the can name the artist. these tracks will be...

The original video, which the focus will be placed most on. Insomnia

One of his other well known hits which we hope will also be recognised. God Is A DJ

Also. We Come 1

Questions to consider:

  • Do you own/stream this track?
  • Do you own/stream anything by this artist?
  • If not either of the above, would you consider buying/streaming this track or anything by this act?
  • Can you name any other tracks by this artist?
  • What would you expect to see in their videos?
  • WHo would you consider to listen to this genre of music?
Other:
If our track is relatively unrecognised as well as our artist i will re-focus some of the questions to the specific genre (house)

Following this re-search along with other factors such as showing our sample clip and defining our primary/secondary audience as a group we will all combine these into one vodcast where each aspect of our audience research can be clearly identified and we should have a real grasp on our target audience.

Faithless 'Insomnia' 30sec clip ROUGH EDIT

Our rough edit is a short clip we put together to get a feel for the music video we are planning on creating, we used different locations and different shots/angles to try find perfects shots for our clips. Also this clip provided us time to experiment with the editing on our music video, therefore we were able to know what worked well and what didn't.

Faithless 'Insomnia' 30s clip EDITING

On wednesday the 9th Oct we edited our 30sec clip, we wanted to experiment with different effects we could use, different shot types and different locations. When filming we filmed roughly an hours worth of footage of all different angles and shots that would make it easier for us in the editing process.

One of the first effects we used was layering we achieved this by reducing the opacity of the clip and copying and pasting it over the original clip. this creates a layered image on screen in in the bathroom shot where our character was sitting on the toilet this proved to be very effective with the cast effect.

The cast effect was one of the effects we first used, through looking through the different effects provided be Final Cut Pro the image showed dark colours which is what we were trying to achieve as the lighting in the location we used was very bright.

Faithless 'Insomnia' 30s clip SHOOT

Me and jake filmed our 30 second clip on tuesday the eighth of October, we decided upon our location which was a dark room used by the art department at Ilkley Grammar School. The dark room provided minimum light which goes along with the theme of our music video 'I can't get no sleep.'

We used multiple shots and used three locations in total, we wanted to use close ups and mid shots to show our main characters emotion and actions. This will be in much more depth in our full video.

As this is just a rough 30 second clip we wanted to get an idea of the shots we could use and would be able to use. We now know that we are allowed to shoot in the dark room which will no doubt be a key location for our actual shoot

However we did encounter some problems

  • Finding a dark background - even though we shot in the dark room our backdrops were still white/grey this will be something we have to plan ahead for to get a black background sheet of card.
  • Getting official permission to film in the dark room.
  • Lack of dark locations - other than the dark room on school site there isn't much to work with and if we were to film in school our video would have to be heavily edited. We need to decide on a suitable location outside of school.
  • Using an efficient light source.
  • To know the lyrics.

This is the original video this is what we were kind of trying to achieve in the sense of using dark colours and star treatment.

Our clip will be up shortly.

Our Group

The group i am in is with two other members of my class after an in depth discussion about who should go with who we came to the conclusion that me, Declan Williams and Jake Wilson would work in a group well together. This excluded George Holmes and Ben Brearly.

The song we are going to make a music video for is Faithless - Insomnia

Here is the original video:

Pitch Idea 2 Video

Pitch idea 2

TRACK: Blue Orchid
YEAR: 2005
DIRECTOR: Michel Gondry
GENRE: Garage rock, punk blues
MAIN AUDIENCE: M+F 15-40

My music video plan is to use this song but apply it to a complete different context and make it a performance video, this performance video will be similar to this...

I think this could work well as the beat in Blue Orchid is similar to the one used for the Hardest Button To Button video, as the bass drum is kicked the drum can move from location to location along with a guitar possibly aswell. Then there could be a twist at the end as the song stops the drummer/guitarist falls of his seat or falls of a cliff?

Also in the back drop there would be certain members of the class holding up cards with the lyrics on them to add something else to the video.

lip-syncing will be included but only for certain sections of the song however there aren't too many lyrics
Lyrics:

Shots:

Like the music video for The hardest button to button they use a number of different shots/camera angles to stop the video from being boring aswell as changing up the performance a little bit which is something i would have to add.

Locations:

For this type of music video locations would have to be key and i think the perfect location/s would be Leeds/Ilkley as Leeds would provide intertextuality for a wider audience.

Long shots such as these could be used to show the art gallery as the drum beats across the path in front then close ups can be used as well as mid shots to add variety.

Millenium square would also be a good location as there is steps to go up or down also there is a lot of potential for different shots.

Another ideal location would have to be Briggate down the main shopping high street of Leeds.

Victoria Quarter would also be a key location if we were to film in the city

As well as the Corn Exchange

Costumes:

For costumes all the people involved would have to wear a similar attire to make it look like we are some form of band e.g all black.

The person playing the drum/guitar can therefore wear a different coloured top or something different to make them stand out from the others.

Original Pitch Video

Original Pitch Idea

TRACK: Alright
YEAR: 2012
DIRECTOR:
GENRE: House
MAIN AUDIENCE: M+F 15-25

Narrative:

Its a love story between a hetro-sexual couple facing relationship problems - link with the lyrics "Its alright" The two go separate ways and meet up with their friends and both do stereotypical things with  their friends to try to get over one another. As the video endures there will be constant references to the two missing each other and as the video comes to a close the two can't stand being away from each other so they run back together.  The lyrics are linked with the visuals in certain sections.

Performance:

The performance included in my video will be of the chorus where one character will play the role of the artist in a hip-hop attire to go along with the music with friends in the background a convention i found in hip-hop music videos.

Genre:

House music is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in the American city of Chicago in the early 1980's. It was initially popularized circa 1984 in Chicago, but beginning in 1985, it fanned out to other major cities such as Baltimore, Detroit, Toronto, Mexico City, New York City, San Francisco, Boston, Montreal, CancĂșn, Manchester, Miami, London, and Paris. It then began to influence popular music in Europe

Casting:

In total there will be 8 characters (3 Boys) (5 Girls) Two main characters, one boy one girl.

The Male character will play a similar role to the one AJ English played in Calvin Harris' 'Bounce' this role needs to be carried out well to give the video a sense of verisimilitude. This will be a 'Bad Boy' role which will be signified by the mise en scene e.g. baseball cap or smoking and tattoos? maybe.

The girl on the other hand will be a binary opposite to the boy a goody two shoes almost so there will be a big contrast between the two. As the separation really affects her in the way it doesn't for the boy. Her emotions will be shown by close ups and her actions such as throwing a picture at the wall.

Costumes and Mise En Scene:
